This design-based research study examines learning transfer in a elementary science education curriculum. The curriculum features an educational videogame and embodies design and theoretical conjectures about the idea of formative transitions. Formative transitions foster two important outcomes: (a) supporting productive individual learner’s contributions, and (b) illuminating learning transfer as transactions that contribute to collaborative inquiry in real-time and over time. A transactional analysis of an enactment in a fourth grade describes and analyzes collective participation in real-time and over time. Discussion and implications consider social processes for linking and separating multiple situations by transforming participation in relation to expanding and encompassing social contexts in relation to complementary lines of inquiry into learning transfer.
