In this paper, I will use data generated from a study focused on the civic and economic understandings of youth and preservice teachers to investigate the ways youth, preservice teachers, and practicing teachers engaged with one another in conversations about maps of local middle schools. Although the word “panopticon” was not used by the participants, the structure they were describing, a wheelspoke, aligns with the structure Foucault described in Discipline and Punish. In this paper, I explore the conversations that took place as well as the potentiality for talking about panoptic school/prison structures in teacher education.
