From Sequential to Expansive Learning for Urban Latina/o Youth: Toward High Challenge and Meaningful Support

Abstract

This study is part of a research program on innovating high schools with documented success in serving predominantly Latina/o youth in lower-income urban communities. We conducted yearlong studies of the organizational culture and classroom instruction at three schools. Aligned with the AERA conference theme, the present study highlights instruction at a school with a mission to counter historic underrepresentation of low-SES students of color in higher education. In this way, the study aligns tightly with the theme of working to achieve the promise of equal educational opportunity. The featured school for this study focused on social transformation of Latina/o youth (to believe in themselves as future scholars) with a strong press for college-readiness. It features instructional promise and tensions.
