Trajectories of Parent School Involvement From Kindergarten to Eighth Grade: Antecedents and Outcomes

Sat, April 29, 2:45 to 4:15pm, Grand Hyatt San Antonio, Floor: Fourth Floor, Crockett B

Abstract

It is generally known that parent school involvement tends to decline as children age. The reported pattern of involvement is mostly based on cross-sectional studies comparing parents of younger children to those of older children and a few longitudinal studies assuming a single population with individual trajectories normally distributed around a population mean trajectory. Using a person-centered approach, the present study aims to uncover distinct trajectories of parent school involvement over elementary and middle school years, identify early antecedents that explain membership in different trajectories of involvement, and investigate the association of trajectory group membership with subsequent student outcomes. The results of preliminary analysis indicate five distinct trajectory groups. Further results and discussion will be presented in detail.
