The authors conducted a scoping review of the literature on shared mental models (SMMs) to understand how this construct has been applied to health professions trainees in clinical teams. Healthcare literature databases were searched for studies published 2000-2016 that mentioned SMMs and included undergraduate and graduate-level health professions trainees in actual and simulated clinical team settings. Of nineteen studies meeting the inclusion criteria, five (26%) described interventions designed to foster SMMs in teams including graduate (21%, n=4) and undergraduate learners (5%, n=1). SMMs were measured in five studies (26%) using a wide variety of measurement approaches. These results highlight opportunities for further investigation to increase our understanding of the role of SMMs in our trainees’ delivery of team-based, clinical care.
