Service-Learning as an Experimental Treatment for Improving Preservice Teachers' Academics, Attitudes, and Competencies for Teaching English Language Learners

Abstract

The benefits and impact of Service-Learning (S-L) pedagogy in higher education are most times limited by a lack of substantial research design predicated on the fact that the nature of S-L features personal stories which are not easily quantified. This proposal presents the results of the analysis of experimental research designed to measure the effects of S-L as a treatment for improving pre-service teachers’ academics, attitudes, and competencies in lesson planning for ELLs. This paper presents a brief summary of the S-L activities participated in by a treatment section of the course in comparison to the traditional field experiences of a control section while largely focusing on the unique experimental research design of an S-L study.
