Facebook Usage Within a Preservice Teacher Education Classroom: An Inquiry Through Currere

Thu, April 27, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the use of Web 2.0 tools, specifically Facebook, in my preservice teacher education courses, using a course Facebook page from Fall 2014 as a pilot case study. Using currere, an autobiographical form of self-study in curriculum development (Pinar, 1975, 2004), I trace my own use and implementation of Facebook in my teaching. Situating my implementation of Facebook within available literature, I examine current trends with Facebook in the higher education classroom, focusing on their potential to bring humanistic teaching practices into the preservice education classroom. Considerations for future studies and implications for teaching are explored.
