Engaging Children as Co-Researchers: Voices on School Experiences of Inclusion in Indonesia

Fri, April 28, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

Indonesia has experienced a significant movement in the development of inclusive education over the past five years. This has been expedited through arrangements for regular public schools to become model schools enrolling children with disabilities. While the reform has given a title to these schools as School Providing Inclusive Education, Nilholm and Alm (2010) assert that it is critical to analyse whether so-called ‘inclusive schools’ are truly grounded on inclusive principles through members of the community. This project, part of a larger study, aims to understand current inclusive practices in one primary school through the children’s lens. Focus is given to an inquiry approach involving children as co-researchers in investigating the research questions and their own questions through visual methods.
