Beginners' Struggles and Challenges With Qualitative Research: Instructional Strategies From 10 Years of Classroom Teaching

Abstract

This presentation, based on ten years of teaching qualitative research, focuses on the effective ways of guiding graduate students who are learning to design and conduct qualitative research for the first time. The findings will be reported in two parts. First, three identified areas that first-time qualitative research learners most commonly have difficulties with will be presented: (a) constructing interview protocols, (b) conducting interviews, and (c) coding analysis and writing up of results. Subsequently, the instructional strategies to address the challenges will be presented as follows: (a) discussion of common mistakes and instructor comments through collective coding real time in class, (b) review of the evolution/process of a finished qualitative research project, and (c) timed mock interviews with collective debriefing.
