Educational Uplift as Praxis: A Counternarrative on Mexican American College Students in Contested Terrain

Abstract

Using critical race theory (CRT) and Latino critical race (LatCrit) theory as a framework, this paper qualitatively explores how a cadre of self-identified Mexican-American and Hispanic college students navigate contested terrain. Findings are presented as a composite narrative to integrate multiple sources of data, including interviews, observations, and other items (e.g. newspaper articles, essays, YouTube videos, etc.) collected from the students, as well as interviews with their family members and select educators.
