The purpose of this study is to investigate the degree and sources of heterogeneity and variability in measurement comparability research for subgroups within language groups across countries. This effect is investigated in four countries with English-language education systems: Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The PISA 2012 mathematics and science assessments are the data source for the research. Students’ reading score and items from PISA Student Questionnaire are selected for analysis in this study. Both manifest DIF and latent DIF analyses are proposed to explore the potential causes of DIF. Results from this study suggests that examinees with various language background and educational resources in different countries cannot be assumed to have homogeneous response patterns.
