This study was conducted at the American Academy in Rome (AAR), where, every year, a select group of "artists and scholars...are invited to Rome to pursue their work in an atmosphere conducive to intellectual and artistic freedom, interdisciplinary exchange, and innovation" (“American Academy in Rome,” 2016). This elite learning environment offers a unique window into expert knowledge development within an interdisciplinary context. The collaborative setting allowed for research that examined several understudied elements of learning; most previous work has been done in the natural and social sciences, quantitatively, and/or among children or novices. Findings categorize types of collaborative learning amongst experts and trace movement of fellows between formal and informal spaces places of collaborative work.
