The purpose of this study was to examine the notions of literacy curricular practices enacted in six literacy/reading methods textbooks in relation to English learners (ELs). We were particularly interested in investigating equity and social justice issues pertaining to literacy instruction of ELs in 21st century classrooms. Through a critical content analysis, this study then attempts to describe and critique literacy instructional practices used to prepare ELs for college and career. It attempts to also dismantle any power structures that build walls for ELs to access and equity in literacy instruction while increasing social disparities.
