Community Engagement, Neoliberalism, and the Potential for an Engaged University

Abstract

I explore the meaning of engagement, university community engagement, and the role of what I call here the engaged scholar. This paper begins to look at these factors within the urban university through an institutional ethnography that will compare the contradictory discourses of individual entrepreneurship along with communal engagement through examining texts published by my own institution along with personal experiences and observations.
