This presentation will focus on discussing the results of a study that examined the effects of using multimedia technology for functional sight word instruction for children with autism under two conditions: self-directed learning by the children and adult-directed instruction delivered by parents. Participants were three children with autism ages 4-7 and their parents. The effectiveness of the intervention was measured by how many words each child learned during each condition. A single-subject alternating treatment research design embedded in a multiple baseline across participants was utilized. Results of the study varied as two children displayed significant gains in functional sight words learned during both instructional conditions while the third child showed gains only in words learned during the adult-directed condition.
