Learning From Teachers: Understanding Spatial Reasoning and Learning in Math and Science Classrooms

Thu, April 27, 12:00 to 1:30pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 2

Abstract

The research proposed here will explore (a) what roadblocks keep teachers from using and valuing spatial reasoning abilities in their classrooms, (b) how those roadblocks might be overcome to integrate spatial reasoning, learning, and assessment techniques into teachers’ basic pedagogical knowledge, and (c) what teachers who currently leverage spatial ability in their classrooms actually do. More specifically, we will seek to understand what – if anything – teachers understand about spatial reasoning and learning as it relates to their pedagogical practice, and how – if at all – a set of general design principles and specific classroom practices might aid teachers in more fully and successfully integrating spatial pedagogical elements into their teaching.
