Abstract

The purpose of this qualitative comparative case study was to examine how participation in community-based programs influenced parents’ interactions with their children’s schools and fostered the community cultural wealth of parents. The first case study examined a parent-empowerment program that taught participants to identify and select high quality schools in a school choice environment. The second case study examined a community-based technology program that supported Latino parents with developing skills and fostering fellowship among community members to help families better connect with their children’s schools. The acquisition of new knowledge and resources emerged as a critical finding that enabled the participants to form better relationships and become more involved with their children’s schools.
