The Influence of Self-Efficacy, Role Construction, and Technology Knowledge on Parental Mediation of Adolescents' Technology Use

Abstract

Past researchers have attributed the differential benefits of technology access on low SES parents’ lack of effective technology mediation strategies. But, far of providing support for such claims, empirical works on how low income parents support children’s technology use is lacking. The present study examined ways in which low income parents help their adolescent children use technology and how these mediation choices are related to motivational and contextual factors. Using factor and path analytic methods, results show that sample parents are active mediators of technology. Contextual factors such as parents’ technology knowledge are mediated by motivational factors in their effects on monitoring and supportive mediation behaviors, whereas these contextual factors only have direct effects on restrictive mediation.
