The Alphas: Not Your Average Gendered Group

Abstract

This narrative inquiry implicates socio-historical, cultural, political narratives and their associated binaries in the (re)production of inequities in mathematics. This work reports on a group of high school students that were a subset of a larger study. The meta-narratives these students negotiated their relationships with mathematics through allowed this particular group of students to identify as “good at math,” but they did so through a “back door” manner that felt inauthentic and produced many tensions. Gender, race, class and athlete status all played a role.
