On Innervisions and Becoming in Urban Education: Pentecostal Hip-Hop Pedagogies in the Key of Life

Abstract

In this paper, I explore newly emerging pedagogies that take on aspects of the teaching philosophies of Maxine Greene. In particular, I engage with the concept of “becoming” as it relates to Hip-hop education and Pentecostal pedagogy – two contemporary approaches to teaching and learning that embrace her philosophies. This paper expands on the concept of becoming by bringing it into dialogue with the concept of innervisions(Wonder, (1973/2000) with a goal of outlining how these approaches build upon the work of Maxine Greene and provide a new way forward for urban education for marginalized youth of color.
