Mind the Gap: An Examination of Leadership Strategies to Raise the Attainment of Disadvantaged Children

Abstract

This paper will draw on data collected from a series of semi-structured interviews with headteachers and other stakeholders in 3 local authorities on the use of the Pupil Premium in 28 high performing schools. The Pupil Premium is an additional payment made to schools to close the attainment gap between pupils who were eligible for the funding and the attainment of their peers who were not entitled to the additional funding. In particular, the paper will focus on the importance of leadership strategies in developing an effective school culture that can contribute to policies that raise the attainment levels of marginalized children. It will identify particular aspects of culture and values that have been developed in the schools.
