The purpose of this paper is to utilize the history of school effectiveness and improvement research to propose future research opportunities and needs. To achieve this purpose, this paper will review the work of school effectiveness and improvement pioneer, Samuel Coburn Stringfield. From the extensive, rigorous, and innovative work of Stringfield, I derive lessons to help guide the advancement of school effectiveness and improvement research.
