Session Type: Roundtable Session
Four researchers individually examined the ways in which coursework, authentic learning context teaching experiences, and mentorship facilitated music teacher identity construction for preservice music teachers (PMT). Theoretical frameworks varied from the Wenger’s (1998) identity trajectories and Tharpe & Gallimore’s (1991) stages of role exchange to the use of metaphors (Black & Halliwell, 2000; Cook-Sather, 2009; Saban, 2006, 2009) to the concept of idealogical becoming and figured worlds (Bakhtin, 1981; Holland, Lachiotte, Skinner, & Caine, 2001). Researcher will present their qualitative research projects about preservice music teacher identity construction. Then, a discussant will find commonalities and differences and make suggestions for practical implications and future research.
