Session Type: Symposium
This symposium is based on an edited book that describes the ways in which one project attempted to transform the theory and practice of language and bilingualism in education by taking up translanguaging theory. The project puts forth an approach to translanguaging pedagogy, placing elements of a developing translanguaging theory alongside the existing policies and practices observed in New York State. This symposium describes the project’s vision and approach, then shares empirical research documenting specific moments that together highlight how educators and their students both took up, as well as resisted, translanguaging theory and practice. The papers analyze how teachers and students use translanguaging in making sense of their teaching and learning in bilingual, ESL and general education settings.
