72.023 - Social Justice Standards: Does the Common Core Allow Room for Critical Pedagogy?

Abstract

The Common Core State Standards were designed to prepare all students for college by encouraging rigorous classroom content and higher order thinking (Common Core State Standards Initiative, 2015). While few concerned with classroom pedagogy will bemoan an emphasis on college-ready skills, critical educators will likely question whether the equity-oriented goals the Common Core are attainable if schools neglect to explicitly challenge structural oppression. This symposium will convene critical scholars to discuss whether the Common Core Standards expand or restrict opportunities for teachers to build critical consciousness through their curricula. The symposium is comprised of four papers each engaging in a distinct examination of the intersection between Common Core and critical pedagogy.
