Session Type: Symposium
This session focuses on innovative approaches to preparing teachers to work for equity and challenge inequity in the U.S., Australia, and New Zealand. Although different in many ways, each country has persistent inequalities between the educational opportunities and outcomes of historically marginalized students and their mainstream counterparts. Each paper describes and analyzes an innovative teacher education program finely-tuned to the local history and patterns of inequality and inequity in its own context. The papers conceptualize equity-centered teacher education programs and report empirical findings about the social, intellectual, and organizational contexts that support and constrain learning to teach for equity in different contexts. Together, the papers contribute to broader understandings about teacher preparation for equity across local, national, and transnational contexts.
