Abstract

While parent and family engagement has become central on discussions about student success, critical research on the field has indicated that parent involvement programs often have failed to engage all parents in meaningful ways. This critique has also been taken by reformers using neoliberal policies, such as school choice, that aim, at least on paper, to empower families. In this panel, we investigate what it means for families to be engaged in this neoliberal school context. Through data collected in charter schools, traditional public schools, nonprofit organizations, and institutions of higher education, our panel unpacks the complexity of family involvement and examines how neoliberal ideals of individualism and choice provide new opportunities and place new pressures on families.
