18.042 - Disrupting Traditional Teacher Professional Development (PD): Critical PD for Teachers Committed to Social Justice

Thu, April 27, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 214 B

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

This symposium features papers from critical education researchers, as a collective, they actively problematize the kinds of learning spaces that teachers are offered at their school site and school district. This panel conceptualizes the notion of teacher professional development to be more than just a process of professionalization and instead examines the humanizing experiences and critical perspectives in each of the different sites. The scholars investigate critical teacher development sites in urban school districts within California and New York. Each presenter will discuss the ways teachers of Color and teachers of Color in collaboration with White allies, engaged with, and further developed their analysis of larger social justice issues as they worked to bring those ideas into their classrooms.
