Abstract

This symposium contributes to the evolving research agenda for conceptualizing and researching young people’s agency in educational interactions. Agency refers to the opportunity, will and skill to act upon and transform activities and circumstances. The presentations offer socioculturally grounded approaches to operationalize agency to examine social processes of learning. Many of the contributions originate within science education, but they span elementary and secondary education as well as interviews with children about their lives. Each presentation advances understanding of how young people's agency is negotiated in educational interactions and what enables and constrains its emergence. Yet, the symposium argues that agency cannot be adequately theorized as an individual attribute; sociocultural contexts within which agency is enacted need to be accounted for.
