Session Type: Symposium
This session involves scholars whose work applies Portraiture to better understand the experiences of students and teachers of color. We present research that: 1) Investigates collective healing and self-identity with young Black and Brown girls; 2) Examines Ethnic Studies portraits of Filipina/o American K-12 teachers; 3) Examines the utility of self-portraits in an elementary classroom and 4) Considers the connections across Chicana Feminist Theories alongside Portraiture for educational research. We share the possibilities of Portraiture, Women of Color Feminisms, Ethnic Studies and Decolonial Frameworks to advance our understandings of teaching and learning through research that moves us toward action. To this end we offer ways educators and researchers can utilize developments with Portraiture to better serve marginalized students and communities.
