Learning in PBL is triggered by problems, driven by problems, and guided by problems. Problems not only carry content knowledge to be learned but also structure students’ learning processes. Yet, it is still not clear exactly how PBL problems affect students’ learning in the PBL process. Various aspects of PBL problems, such as their difficulty levels, students’ perceptions of them, structuredness types, gaps between target and source problem cases, or modality of problem presentation, may have quantitatively and qualitatively different effects on students’ learning. An understanding of these effects of PBL problems on students’ learning in the PBL process could help us to not only design more effective PBL problems, but also design more appropriate support throughout the learning process.
