Abstract

Questions about teacher preparation are among the most hotly contested in public education today. Debates about preparing effective teachers surface deep differences in how various interest groups envision the role of teachers in a democratic society as well as diverging views on how to develop their associated capacities. This symposium brings together experienced teacher educators who believe that effective teaching in a modern democracy centers on engaging diverse students in meaningful academic work. Drawing from their own practice, authors offer research-based approaches for how teachers and those responsible for their professional development might be supported in developing cultural competence and relational capacity as central aspects of their practice.
