72.020 - Education Expanded: Youth Learning Places and Youthspaces

Abstract

This symposium focuses on the voices and lived experiences of youth and their families, asserting that young people are legitimate stakeholders in educational decision-making. Each of the five theoretically and thematically diverse papers focus on youth learning places, the material and social realities which shape educational experiences; and/or youthspaces as learning spaces where youth are the driving force behind educational opportunities. As a group we contemplate how youth and their families reclaim, reconfigure, and reimagine spaces that meet their educational needs and objectives in ways that help us as educators and educational researchers to reconceptualize meanings of educational opportunity.
