14.015 - Making Spaces for Youth From Nondominant Communities: New Approaches for Supporting Equitable and Consequential Experiences

Abstract
Despite growing interest in makerspaces for transforming how we understand ‘what counts’ as learning, as a learner, and as a learning environment, there is little evidence that the maker movement involves a diverse audience. Our session contributes to the emerging literature on equity in making by addressing equity-oriented making pedagogies and environments. The papers/posters describe studies focused on (1) Designing making experiences and pedagogies that support youth in “mobilities” (e.g., moving ideas, tools, resources, and ways of being across boundaries) towards the co-construction of new making practices, narratives and spaces; and (2) Supporting practitioners/researchers in pedagogical and relational work with youth in making-spaces. Cutting across these two are discussions of new conceptual/methodological approaches in support of equity-oriented making pedagogies and environments.
