Session Summary

72.018 - Research Knowledge and a Vision of Equal Scholarly Participation: International Perspectives and Opportunities for Collaboration

Mon, May 1, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Grand Hyatt San Antonio, Floor: Fourth Floor, Texas Ballroom Salon C

Session Type: Working Group Roundtable

Abstract

The 2017 AERA theme emphasizes the importance of empirical research and its role in creating equal educational opportunities. While “equal educational opportunity” in the U.S. often connotes with civil rights and minority access to education, internationally this phrase can have multiple interpretations, including access to knowledge and participation in the scholarly community. Scholars from many nations struggle to publish in English-dominant journals and make their work known internationally. This working group brings together scholars from five nations with different historical, political, linguistic, and economic backgrounds. Through dialogues about research methodologies within and across nations, we seek to examine pathways for a more equitable access to research publishing and sharing of international expertise.
