Session Summary

56.044 - Visual Thinking in Action Through Drawing and Comics

Sun, April 30, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: River Level, Room 6C

Session Type: Demonstration/Performance

Abstract

Two artist-scholars demonstrate the development of visual thinking in real time. Bringing together current research in cognitive science alongside examinations of artistic practices, they present their work through live drawing performances. They will lead attendees in hands-on play of drawing and comics-making as ways of thinking through complex, abstract ideas. From the classroom to the workplace, visual thinking is gaining prominence as an essential skill. Translating abstract ideas into visual form opens new avenues for insight and understanding. Drawing begins the conversation, by externalizing thoughts and perceptions in visible form. Comics extends that conversation, as author/artists attend to individual drawings as well as the overall composition, incorporating words alongside pictures to introduce another dimension to this fertile idea-space..
