Abstract

Research on race and racism in teacher education has often focused on two main topics: preparing teachers to understand race and racism within the experiences of students and communities, and unpacking teacher racial identities as it connects to classroom pedagogy. Little research, however, has explored the struggles of teacher educators who work for racial justice. This panel brings together six counternarratives of racial justice-oriented teacher educators who have built community within their programs to challenge the status quo. From bringing one’s whole self to the classroom, to developing allies and solidarity with students, to questioning who is privileged within democratic pedagogy, each of these papers emphasizes the relational and community oriented approach of non-dominant teacher educators towards transformation.
