Abstract

Academic literacy is largely aligned with cultural values of dominant groups. Students from other backgrounds often have to negotiate different socio-cultural identities and power relations in literacy classrooms. Building on the idea that literacy empowers only when diverse forms of cultural and linguistic capital are available and mobilized into educational and social practices, we present multilingual literacy experiences and concurrent identity construction across youths in varying contexts: immersion classroom students, a migrant youth using transnational new media, and a white native English speaker with a multilingual learning trajectory. Collectively, this session examined youth’s negotiation across language, power relations, and cultural identities using available community capital. Implications consider ways to engage youth’s voices and practices into equitable pedagogical practices and possibilities.
