68.022 - Cultivating Critical Educators: Ideological Shifts and Programmatic Supports of Equitable Practice Along the Teacher Continuum

Abstract

This symposium discusses urban teacher development by examining pre-service and in-service teachers’ sense-making processes, the structural and cultural conditions surrounding them, and the learning experiences provided within three different contexts. This symposium draws on the critical participant research of three teacher educators in facilitating teachers’ ideological and political clarity along the pre-service through in-service developmental continuum. Through investigating contexts within a small high school, an English Language Arts focused teacher preparation program, and a teacher preparation class that single subject candidates take as their first course, the presenters provide a complex view of the teacher development continuum in order to provoke teacher educators and instructional leaders to rethink the cultural, structural, and pedagogical conditions that cultivate critical educators.
