Session Type: Symposium
What does optimal youth development look like for populations with different positionality relative to existing systems of dominance and subjugation? Papers in this symposium examine critical consciousness and identity development among distinct and differently-positioned populations of American youth, and consider how young people’s awareness of and facility with critical concepts and practices can support both individual development and also a broader commitment to equality and liberation. Individual papers address work with adolescent girls of color, predominantly White and affluent Jewish teen girls, Black students at a middle school for boys of color, and African-American adolescent males as represented in popular and social media.
