Session Summary

32.039 - Approximations of Practice Across Teacher Education Contexts

Fri, April 28, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Grand Hyatt San Antonio, Floor: Third Floor, Bonham E

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Teacher education research focuses more on curriculum and structure than on pedagogy (Grossman, 2005). The literature is particularly silent about the pedagogy of courses that are explicitly tied to clinical practice (Clift & Brady, 2005). Without research on practice-based pedagogies, efforts to focus on core practices in teacher education will fail in implementation (McDonald, Kazemi, & Kavanagh, 2013). This proposed symposium presents research into the pedagogy of teacher educators in practice-based courses and programs. In particular, papers present findings from large-scale, video -based studies of approximations of practice, which Grossman et al. (2009) define as opportunities to engage in “deliberate practice” of “particularly challenging components of [teaching] practice” (p. 2077).
