53.039 - Achieving the Promise of Equal Educational Opportunity for Subgroups of English Learners in Washington State

Sun, April 30, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 221 D

Session Type: Structured Poster Session

Abstract

The Road Map Project unites seven communities in the Seattle metropolitan region around the goal of dramatically increasing the number of students on track to graduate “college and career ready.” The English learner (EL) workgroup within this initiative has partnered with [our organization] for five years to conduct applied research on a range of policies and practices to support the academic success of a diverse population of ELs, who represent over 20 percent of the student population and speak 167 different home languages. This poster session highlights findings about ELs’ time to reclassification, advanced coursetaking, representation in special education, graduation and early warning systems, and strategies for student registration in the region or across the state.
