Recently, many new innovative items, including technology-enhanced items, have been designed to better measure what students should be able to know and can do. This symposium will focus on practical and novel uses of Think-Aloud Protocols to ensure that student assessment data from both summative and formative assessments that utilize innovative items provide valid inferences for all students, including those with special needs. Four papers will be presented detailing some of the latest work on how Think-Aloud Protocols are being used in innovative ways to help inform classroom assessment and instruction. The session includes internationally-renowned experts in the field of Cognition and Assessment, with specific expertise in the use of Think-Aloud Protocols and their application to assessment validation.
