Session Type: Symposium
This symposium features four papers that seek to illuminate the political beliefs and civic practices of America’s high school teachers as well as the ways that these teachers engage students in social and political discussions. The papers draw on data from a 2015 survey of a representative sample of U.S. public high school teachers and a purposeful sample of U.S. elite private high school teachers. One paper will focus on U.S. social studies teachers, one on U.S. English, and one on U.S. mathematics teachers. A fourth paper will examine how teacher practices are related to the political community of teachers working in particular school sites. Implications for teacher education and professional development will be discussed.
