Abstract

There is a call to examine critical dimensions of educational opportunity. We explore reciprocal learning in this SSHRC funded project between Chinese and Canadian teachers in mathematics education as they learn to work collaboratively to improve teaching and learning in their classrooms. We discuss how attitudes of teachers and students have changed, how the use of textbooks can affect mathematics problem solving, an analysis on classroom lesson design and implementation, the key components of large-scale assessment tests in the two countries, and a comparison of creative solution reasoning in both countries. This symposium will provide the audience with research results in how teacher pairs have learned from each other and what we have learned about cross cultural knowledge and communication.
