58.025 - Culturally Relevant Computer Science Education: From Theory to Practice

Sun, April 30, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: River Level, Room 6D

Session Type: Demonstration/Performance

Abstract

Given the importance of technology across all segments of the economy, accessibility to rigorous and inclusive computer science education for all students has become a critical issue. Yet computer science courses remain highly segregated, with girls and people of color vastly underrepresented. With the aim of broadening participation in computing for underrepresented students, this session will explore the theoretical foundations and practical applications of culturally relevant computer science education. Panelists will examine and discuss examples of engaging, equity-focused, social justice oriented practical approaches to computer science education. This session will contribute to understandings of culturally relevant computer science education by building upon the theoretical underpinnings and providing practice-based models of culturally relevant computer science teaching and learning.
