Abstract

The collective aim of the papers in this symposium is to illuminate the issue of what it has meant to strive for achieving the promise of equal opportunity education in the context of Baltimore, Maryland. The presentations in this symposium contextualize the history and legal policies that have informed the quest for equity in education in Baltimore, where race and class have persisted in framing issues of access and quality for centuries. Additionally, the presentations on this panel highlight challenges, as well as solutions for filling the voids generated by racial and class gaps. Drawing from historical records, geospatial analysis, and case studies, the presentations are significant for aiding understanding of the complexity of equity and education in Baltimore.
