Abstract

The cumulative sociopolitical educational climate of South Louisiana has resulted in the developing needs of ELL minority students—the grey—going unattended as issues with educating the majority Black and White students continue to receive the proverbial “grease” due to prolonged inequities among educational capital. This symposium begins with an overview of national and state ELL education issues with specific attention to teacher preparation and meeting the needs of ELLs. The discussion then refines its lens, focusing on a case study of inservice teachers’ experiences of working with limited district supports for ELLs. The symposium concludes with a second case study of pre-service teachers engaged in language learning scenarios to improve awareness and responsiveness for meeting the needs of ELLs.
