Abstract

This symposium describes how university faculty collaborated to design and implement an arts-focused teacher preparation program model aimed at addressing issues of equity, language, and cultural diversity through an interdisciplinary approach in a bilingual, community school. As part of this design, faculty coordinated syllabi across methods courses, the student-teaching seminar, and classroom/community fieldwork to infuse creativity into the teacher education program with the ultimate goal of increasing access to the arts in historically marginalized communities. Faculty leadership, with the support of student teachers, initiated additional programming incorporating the arts in school wide initiatives such as a children’s pop choir and an end of year arts event. The findings stemming from the redesign of the teacher education project will be shared.
