72.022 - Queering the First-Year Experience: Hidden Hindrances to Retaining High-Performing Students of Color

Abstract

In this session, the authors challenge the “one-size-fits-all” First Year Experience model programs implemented at colleges and universities across the U.S. to facilitate new first-time direct from high school students’ transition to college. Authors utilize theory and embrace praxis to unearth and analyze how dual enrollment programs and current college transition and development practices, while providing access to opportunity, do not justly provide fair methods of student support at the university level that leads to academic retention and persistence, achievement, and overall social capital for upward mobility in future endeavors.
